Robotic surgery is transforming gynecologic procedures for surgeons and patients alike. With smaller incisions and more advanced surgical protocols, smoother and easier procedures are not only possible but growing more common. Experts project that 8 in 10 hysterectomies in the next decade will use robotic technology.
At Midwest Women Obstetrician/Gynecologist Ltd in Downers Grove, Illinois, our renowned surgeons are trailblazers in gynecological surgery. Using the state-of-the-art da VinciⓇ system, we perform complex procedures such as hysterectomy and fibroid removal with superior accuracy and efficiency.
Keep reading to learn three of the standout benefits this surgical approach offers.
Smaller incisions have big benefits for patients. With da Vinci surgery, your surgeon creates a group of four to six incisions (or, sometimes just one incision) based on the surgery and your needs. Incisions are less than a half-inch long, translating to many benefits during surgery.
With smaller incisions, there’s less blood loss, a lower risk of infection, and a smoother and easier surgery overall.
With the da Vinci robotic system, a miniature camera, positioned within one of the tiny incisions, sends live images to a monitor nearby. Your surgeon directly views this monitor at a surgical console, giving them a magnified 3D image of the entire surgical site.
The console also has specialized controls, which your surgeon uses to move the robotic arms. The controls allow for ultraprecise movement. For example, the robotic “hands” and “wrists” can rotate 360 degrees and can approach the surgical site from any angle.
Although a robot is involved, the surgeon is always in control: The robot never makes a single move unless directed to. Thanks to the increased precision, surgeons can remove diseased tissue more efficiently while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue. Plus, it allows for reproductive organ preservation wherever possible.
Thanks to advanced protocols and smaller incisions, patients have more comfortable experiences. Overall, patients experience far less pain on average versus traditional open surgery, often with a reduced need for potentially habit-forming narcotic medications.
Recovery time is usually shorter too. Studies show that women who undergo robotic gynecologic surgery versus open surgery have consistently shorter hospital stays (1.3 days versus 3 days) – and some procedures require only hours in the hospital.
With robotic surgery, most women resume normal activities within a few weeks instead of months.
At Midwest Women Obstetrician/Gynecologist Ltd, we have a four-decade history of using the most advanced technology to give our patients the best outcomes.
